Mike was an instructor at Millington when I was there. He was famous at the time for appearing in the Time-Life book series about the Vietnam war. He was a machine-gunner, and had been photographed crossing a stream with his M-60 across his shoulders. He lat-moved into Crash Crew afterward. He was like a god to us young boots. I thought the world of him, obviously. Rest In Peace, Mike.

Michael Lynn Thompson, age 72, of Norway Michigan lost his two year battle with leukemia on October 23, 2015, at the Oscar G. Johnson Veteran’s Hospital in Iron Mountain, Mich.
Michael was born on September 24, 1943, to the late Marquis and Sylvia (White) Thompson in San Rafael, California. His family moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where he grew up., He enlisted in the Marine Corps right after high school. At the age of 28 he met the love of his life, Colleen Sullivan and they married March 24, 1974. Together they raised a son and daughter.
He was proud to serve his beloved country as a Master Sergeant in the Marine Corps. He served in Vietnam, Desert Storm and Desert Shield. He continued his 40 plus years of Government service at the Oscar G. Johnson Veteran’s Hospital until he retired in 2005.
Michael was an avid swimmer and enjoyed taking long bicycle rides. He was a wonderful fun-loving grandpa who cherished his five grandchildren. He loved the Dallas Cowboys, telling jokes, watching movies and reminiscing about the Marine Corps.
Michael is survived by his wife, Colleen of Norway, son Michael P. Thompson (Michelle) of Marquette and daughter, Sarah Thompson of Norway, his grandchildren, Jacob, Isaac, Lilah, Aberdeen and Liam, his sister Linda Stubbs (Jim Hubbard) of Scottsdale, AZ and brother, Glenn Thompson of Mesa, AZ.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Scott Michael and Mark David and several brothers and sisters.
A celebration of Michael’s life will take place on Sunday, November 1, 2015, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Talons Supper Club in Norway, Mi.
The family has chosen the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain, to honor Michael’s legacy of life.
