It saddens me to pass on the news of the death of Ed Luisa. I had the honor of serving with him on the AFFR Board of Directors for a few years, as Ed served as the Association Vice-President.

Captain Edward M. Luisa, Jr. passed away on June 7, 2010 surrounded by his family. He was born on September 23, 1931 in New York City to the late Onelia and Edoardo Luisa.
He served in the United States Marine Corps active duty from September 1949 thru October 1969 and then was in the Marine Corps Reserves until 1979. Captain Luisa served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War and was part of the Aircraft Fire Fighting and Rescue Unit and instrumental in saving lives during the 1st rocket attack on February 27, 1967 in DaNang. Captain Luisa also served in Okinawa, Japan, Hawaii and various stateside assignments.
Edward worked for Improved Risk Mutuals in White Plains, New York and later transferred to Charlotte in 1987. He retired from IRM in 1994.
He was Vice President of the Marine Corps Disaster Relief Unit 1 where their main mission was to provide assistance during natural disasters. They assisted In Hurricanes Isabel (2003), Charley, Frances and Ivan (2004), Katrina (2005), Ike (2008) and flooding in Atlanta, Georgia (2009).
Ed was an active member of the Marine Corps League, Detachment 750 currently serving as Senior Vice Commandant and District Vice Commandant. He also was a member of the VFW, American Legion and Aircraft Fire Fighting and Rescue Association.
Survivors include his wife Irene and children Michael and wife Janet, Edward and wife Heather, Christopher and wife Teresa, Albert and AnneMarie, grandchildren Christopher, Lindsey, Martin, Michael, Sophia, Julianna and Giovanni and his sister Mary Ann and husband Rick and nephews John and Thomas.
He was preceded in death by his brother Albert.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 from 6 until 8PM and on Thursday, June 10, 2010 from 2 until 4PM and from 7 until 9PM at Heritage Funeral Home, 3700 Forest Lawn Drive, Matthews, NC 28104. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, June 11, 2010 at 11AM at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Charlotte. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
