Anyone out there a former 8811 Firefighter? I have seen the MOS designation (on paper), but have never heard anyone say that they actually held the MOS of '8811: Firefighter'.
I assume 8811s were on the structural end of the job. If anyone has information, I'd love to hear it.
Thanks!...Stretch

Strech, I was a 8811 while in the Corps, it is a structural MOS. I went to school in Norfolk , Va I think it was in 1963 or 64. Was sent there from New River, N.C. We were responsible for the structural as well as the Crash /Rescue. There was two civilian Fire Capt's anf one civilian Fire Chief who was in overall charge of us. It has probably gone all civilian by now tho. Hope this helps you some. Joe Post

Thanks, Joe.
I guess the 8811s are pretty much gone now, replaced by civilians. I cross-trained with the civilian Federal Fire Department at K-Bay back in the late 80s. That week was pivotal for me, in helping me decide what career I would pursue after the Marine Corps.
I wasn't wrong. The Fire Service is a great career. And I would never have been exposed to it had I not 'fallen' into Marine Crash Crew.
Semper Fidelis!

The 8811 MOS is still apart of the Marine Corps. It is anyone who is certified FFII and has Fire Instructor I & Fire Inspector I. Submitted a request through your S1 with a copy of your certs to get it added.
OCCUPATION DESCRIPTION FROM SERVICE FILE FOR: 8811 (Description dates SEP 1975 - MAR 2005) The firefighter performs various duties incident to firefighting and fire prevention. Participates as member of a crew in controlling and extinguishing fires.

I see that it is still listed as an MOS, although I suspect that it is used more as a certification, than as an actual job title.
One of my old AFFR Instructors, the late David Silva, was instrumental in keeping the MOS number 8811 on the books by getting a few of his 7051's at Bogue Field certified as Structural Firefighters, but that was many years ago.
Nice to know that it can still happen. Thanks, Gumby.
