Larry's thread about Berkeley reminded me of a file I have laying around here in my computer.
I was yah-yahing back and forth with another old Marine and a couple former soldiers on my favorite motorcycle website, when some clown started chiming in, bad-mouthing the military in general and individual soldiers and Marines specifically.
This is my response to him...
I love how these self-proclaimed experts know everything about the military... from the mindset of every single serviceman right down to tactics and rules of engagement... without ever having served the first day.
They talk amongst themselves, reinforcing their own preconceived notions, watch CNN and read blogs, becoming completely convinced that they know the whole story.
You’re entitled to your opinions (and that’s all they are, not facts), but you’re not entitled to escape ridicule caused by your ignorant posts. High-speed internet, Google, and a comfy chair does not an expert make.
You’re as much of an authority on military matters by perusing TV and the internet as one becomes a paralegal by watching CourtTV.
Every city has coffee houses packed with people like you... those who talk a good game about freedom, enforcing laws, and keeping the country safe from terrorism and outside aggression, but when the conversation turns to those who actually do the dirty work, you’re full of derision and disrespect.
We already know what you think of military members... and by extrapolating those comments, I’d venture to guess you have no love for police officers either. You are incapable of performing these services yourself, yet deride those who provide these services on your behalf, ensuring that you have the Constitutional Right to talk $hit about them.
The U.S. Constitution is a mere piece of paper. Unless the ideas written upon it are enforced by people willing to put the nation first and themselves second, this nation is powerless to defend itself from enemies, both foreign and from within.
I don’t care if you agree with me or not. I’ve lived a long time without winning your approval, I’m sure I can go a few more years at least. The fact remains that you simply don’t know what you’re talking about.
I have personally experienced both sides of this issue, as an Active Duty Marine, and later on as a university student, and have debated international and military issues with minds much greater than yours. By all means, please continue to debate with me about this. I would love to hear what the internet has to say about the military.
