Due to Lee Longe's resignation, the AFFR Association is in need of a Secretary, to continue Lee's elected term which expires in October 2011.
From the Marine Corps AFFR Association By-Laws:
Section 2.2 - Vacancies
In the event of death, resignation, or removal of an officer, the board in its direction may elect or appoint a successor to fill the unexpired term.
I posted the appropriate section from the By-Laws to show we're not making up rules as we go.
Another election will take at least a couple months and about $150 in printing and mailing expenses. We have a lot of work to do this time of year, with everybody sending in dues, changes of address, e-mail, and phone numbers. Work has already begun on the next newsletter, writing and collecting material, with Bill Young performing both his duties as President and those of the Secretary.
So to save time and money, the Board shall appoint Lee's replacement. The AFFR Board of Directors is accepting volunteers and / or nominees to succeed Lee as the AFFR Association Secretary.
Please forward names to Bill Young as soon as possible.
Bill Young's new e-mail address: carincash@gmail.com

I suggested you but the board has to pick one. We'll pick from the list of volunteers and nominees. Did you nominate Larry? He's not on our list. Call, write, or email Bill Young... carincash@gmail.com

From the Marine Corps AFFR Association By-Laws...
Section 3.0 Eligibility of Officers
All perspective candidates for elected office must be members in good standing to be eligible for election. All candidates must be Marine Corps AFFR trained at a recognized school or Mobile Unit. No honorary members shall be considered eligible for election. All candidates must be either Active (including Reserves), Retired, or Honorably Discharged U.S. Marine.
. . .
Section 3.3 Secretary
The office of secretary shall be filled at the Biannual business meeting for a period of four (4) years and every four (4) years thereafter. . . .
Article IV Duties of officers
Section 4.2 Secretary
The secretary of the association shall:
Attend all meetings of the board and members.
Record all votes and minutes of all proceedings in a log book kept for association business.
Give or cause to be given notice of all meetings of membership (annual board, and special meetings of the board).
Keep all documents and records of the association as required by law or otherwise in a proper and safe manner.
When required, prepare or cause to be prepared and available at each meeting of the membership a certified list in alphabetical order of the members names entitled to vote thereat.
Perform such duties as described by the board.
-------------------------------- ^ ^ ^
That's how the job is described in the Association By-Laws. To describe it less formally, the Secretary keeps and maintains the membership roster; processes and keeps on file membership applications; sends newsletters, membership rosters, and Taps lists as required; compiles and writes the Association newsletter and submits a draft to the Association President for approval; performs as a point of contact for all members having changes of address, etc.
This requires several hours a month, perhaps more when newsletters are to be mailed out.
All printing, postage, and other expenses shall be reimbursed by the Association Treasurer when itemized receipts are supplied to the Treasurer.
It's quite a bit of work, and not to be taken lightly. This is why we're in this situation in the first place... the guy who accepted the nomination and won the subsequent election ended up not having the time to do the job and resigned less than three months later.
I consider Lee a close friend, and respect him highly, but he would have saved us a lot of work had he given a sufficient amount of thought regarding his expected duties and responsibilities before he accepted the position.
