We just received word today that Ken passed away just a few days ago.
He had been battling cancer for the past couple of years, with this year being extremely difficult for him.
I have been looking for his obituary in the Havelock-area newspapers, but have been unable to find it just yet. When I do, I'll post it here. (Or if anyone else finds it, please feel free to post it here)

I just learned about Kens passing and did some research and found his obituary in the Havelock news paper, this can be found at www.havenews.com. There will be a mass at the Annunciation Catholic church on Saturday and the family is requesting donations be made in lieu of flowers to the American Cancer society or the Havelock Rescue Squad. I will mess Ken and know that there is one heck of a crash crew on stand-by in heaven. Simper Fi Top. Mike B

Kenneth Lee Cobb November 24,2006 Woodbridge Funeral Home of Havelock
Kenneth Lee Cobb, 64, died Nov. 24, 2006 at Craven Regional Medical Center.
A funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Annunciation Catholic Church in Havelock.
Ken was born on June 24, 1942 in Brooklyn, N.Y. to the late Irene and Kenneth C. Cobb.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia.
Ken enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1961 and proudly served his country until his retirement in 1981.
During a tour in Vietnam, Ken was badly injured by a hand grenade that exploded outside his tent and as a result he was awarded a Purple Heart.
In January of 1982, Ken began his second career as a firefighter aboard Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point and again retired in June of 2002.
Being a man of many talents, Ken spent the next year and a half doing construction work for his friends.
He was an excellent painter. In 2004 he was offered employment by First Flight Federal Credit Union as a courier. This position required him to travel daily to Beaufort, Morehead City and New Bern. Because of his love for people, it wasn’t very long before he had made many new friends. This employment continued until May of 2006, when his declining health forced him to resign.
No greater love has one for his family than Ken. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and had great compassion for his fellow man.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Pat, his daughter Deborah; his son Kenneth and his wife Jenny; and three grandchildren, Stephen, Savannah and Gillian; also countless friends.
Ken was a very loving and caring man and treasured his time with family and friends. “Poppy,” as he was affectionately called by his grandchildren, would swell with pride as he watched Stephen on the soccer field, or Savannah and Gillian as they performed in their many dance recitals.
Ken was a member of the Knights of Columbus of Annunciation Parish, Military Order of the Purple Heart, The Retired Enlisted Association, an Envoy member of Beta Sigma Phi, and the Havelock Civitan Club.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 930-B Wellness Dr. Greenville, N.C. 27834 or to the Havelock Rescue Squad.
Woodbridge Funeral Home of Havelock assisted with the arrangements.

I first met Ken at the 2003 reunion at Cherry Point, and he was very friendly and made me feel more than welcome. He was one of my first friends in our AFFR Association.

Sorry to hear the news of such a great man. I remember him as Gunny Cobb back in 1975. He was an inspiration to all who served with him. He truely was a gentleman.

It was very sad to hear of Ken's passing away. He's a fine Marine and I always considered him my friend. He is sure gonna be missed. We worked together at Bogue Field in 1975 ( I think) until I retired in 1977. We use to ride together from Cherry Point housing to Bogue.
