FORTY YEARS AGO-VIETNAM-JULY-SEPTEMBER 1966
On July 1, 1966 the 7th Communications Battalion arrived at Chu Lai. July 5, 1966 saw VMFA-323 arrived at Da Nang from Iwakuni, Japan. Operation HASTINGS, a search and destroy mission, began on July 7th 55 miles North West of HUE, conducted under the command of Task Force DELTA. In addition, Battalion Landing Team, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines made an amphibious landing and conducted DECKHOUSE II in conjunction with Operation HASTINGS.
On August 1, 1966 the advance echelon of the 2nd Korean Marine Brigade arrived in I Corps approximately 3 miles south of Chu Lai. That same day, VMFA-314 arrived in country and VMFA-542 rotated to Iwakuni, Japan. August 28th saw the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines depart Da Nang for Okinawa, Japan.
On September 15, 1966, a 730-man force of doctors, infantrymen, and engineers from the Philippines Civic Action Group arrived at Cam Ranh Bay, with the remaining personnel of the 2,000 man force schedules to arrive in October. September 15-18 DECKHOUSE IV amphibious search and destroy operation was conducted in conjunction with PRAIRE I, 8 miles North East of Dong Ha in I Corps. Elements of Marine Support Group-17 arrived at Da Nang from Iwakuni and the 2d Battalion, 2d Brigade; Royal Korean Marines Corps arrived at Chu Lai from Cam Ranh Bay. On September 24th, H&MS-13 arrived at Chu Lai from Iwakuni, followed on the 25th by Marine Air Group-13. The month ended with the 2d and 5th Vietnamese Marine Corps Battalions moving to Dong Ha while the 3d and 4th VNMC Battalions moved from Dang Ha to Saigon.
The Marine KIA count for July, August, and September 1966 totaled 619, bringing the total Marine Corps KIA list since January 1962 to 1,714. Before the end of December 1966, 418 more Marines will give their lives in RVN.
